We compete to win! And the key to our success is our workforce. Thanks to the performance of each and everyone, we are one team inspired to innovate and continuously improve. To celebrate this and share the excitement of competition, Toyota Motorsport GmbH invited all employees to join one of our home races in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), at Spa Francorchamps on 6 May.
All 300 employees were invited to join with their friends and family, which created a perfect team spirit alongside sponsors and business guests. Most of the 800 participants arrived in the morning and met their colleagues at the hospitality area before the action got under way. The event allowed all employees to truly relax and have fun, giving everyone the opportunity to get close to motorsport at this legendary circuit with the smell and sound of the cars passing only a few meters away, plus easy access to the paddock.
The dedicated TMG hospitality was located in the pit building, above the pits, providing a perfect view over the start-finish straight. It was not only a popular point to warm up and take a rest, there was always food and drink to keep everyone’s energy levels high during the six-hour race. Employees enjoyed chatting with one another on a personal and professional level while people from different departments got to know each other better while having fun. Getting out of the office and spending time with the team away from day-to-day business was very welcome.
“I was impressed with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the lounge; the chill-out area was a very nice idea. Everyone in the team felt the support from our colleagues and their families so it was a good additional motivation,” said Alastair. “It generated a feeling of being part of a big family. I was very pleased to see so many of my colleagues showing their commitment.” “The hospitality was as usual very welcoming and very pleasant; being close to drivers as they pass by and gave an update on the race with special insights was a treat for all guests,” said Marcel.
“The day was perfect and I was able to take my children with me to share these special moments together with them and give them each a small souvenir in return for their enthusiasm,” said Maurice. “Both became now big motorsport fans.” Also Jens’ children have now caught the motorsport bug: “Since two weeks now Porsche and Toyota are competing against each other in a race at my home. It is not the question about who is going to win, but rather who is allowed to play the Toyota part.”
Only a few clouds were in the sky throughout the day and there was a fresh breeze, but not enough to disturb the day. “In fact whoever ordered the weather did a fine job as well,” smiled Kevin. For the start of the race most employees used the open ticket to enter grandstands around the track. It was expected to be an exciting fight at the front and expectations were met as Porsche and TOYOTA GAZOO Racing battled for the win. Most employees stayed till late evening to see the breathtaking finish, which saw the #8 TS050 HYBRID of Silverstone winners Sébastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima take the team’s second victory of the season. In a dramatic race, the #7 of Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi finished just 1.992secs behind in second place. That sparked a great party into the night.
“The highlight was to see our team on the top place of the podium. I enjoyed experience the thrill of racing together with my colleagues. We have not only been observer but in the middle of the action. The race track of Spa-Francorchamps in this magnificent natural setting offers lot possibilities to follow the race action. It was a special event for many reasons,” said Nicole. Dirk agreed: “The event was a complete success. The location in Spa-Francorchamps offered a very good and special flair. Motorsport feeling was guaranteed among team members and guests.” Markus added: “Toyota colors everywhere! On top of that a 1-2 finish that made an already awesome weekend a perfect experience. Thank you!” Seeing both cars on the podium at the second race of the season is for the whole team a huge motivation for the next race in Le Mans.
Now the 2017 TMG Employee Event is but a memory. And it was not only TMG employees who were impressed: “We all enjoyed this day, we cannot express it enough. We have been wonderfully treated as a guest,” said Michael, one of our business guests. “We felt very excited at the idea to spend a day at the circuit. It was a magnificent race experience. Thank you Toyota for this great racing performance and especially for the generous hospitality! It was a great pleasure and honor to be your guest!”
Whoever knows the fascination of the Spa-Francorchamps track and its legendary corners understands why the event was so popular. TMG’s 300 employees agreed that it was a great day, filled with excitement and team spirit! “The employee events are always very well organized and creates a great benefit for us TMG employees,” said Hanno, while Hamish added: "As is always the case the TMG Employee Event was wonderful. My guest Simon has now come all the way from England to the TMG event twice, and judging by how much fun we had it won’t be the last.” “I brought with me a guest from USA and he was really impressed by the whole package offered. Definitely a great event!” concluded Gabriel.
“It’s was an amazing weekend: awesome hospitality, perfect located with a view on the pit lane, excellent food. Also my guest was really surprised to see how much effort TMG made for the event and we have been really pleased to attend the race live as special guests of Toyota as a part of the team,” said Joffrey. “Thank you for this wonderful experience.” Lars concluded: “The Spa even was brilliant and not only because of the good result and nice weather. For me it could not have been better!”
The event ended late in the evening with a party in the team hospitality. Roger, one of our engineers, said: “It was a beautiful experience to hold the winner trophy in my hands at the end of the day. This moment meant a lot to me! I am thankful. This was a very unique experience.” To participate in the event and to see our cars live at the track was also for our employees working in the administration area a remarkable moment. “At such an event I have seen vividly what we are aiming and working for every day. Especially as administrative part you are not always that close to the action. Therefore it was a huge motivation for me and confirmed again that I am working as part of a great team,” said Sandra. “It was a wonderful first time experience to cheering together with the whole team!”
We are looking forward to the next get-together. We can guarantee you that it will not be our last.
